years later, I returned to the unique Suiran Hotel, a five-star luxury property in Kyoto. This hotel, renowned for being the first Luxury Collection hotel in Japan, offered me the chance to re-experience its exceptional offerings since my first trip to Japan in 2017..

Arashiyama, located in the scenic western part of Kyoto, is famous for its breathtaking bamboo forest, historic temples, and delectable local cuisine. Nestled in this picturesque setting is the luxurious Surian Kyoto Hotel, a proud member of the Luxury Collection brand. Known worldwide for offering unique and authentic experiences that evoke lasting, treasured memories, the Luxury Collection features the most exciting and desirable destinations, with each hotel being unique in its charm and offerings. Arashiyama captivates visitors with its lush landscapes and serene atmosphere. While many come to explore the famous bamboo forest, it’s best to visit early in the morning to avoid crowds. Beyond the forest, the stunning views of the mountains from the hotel or a peaceful moment by the river offer a gratifying way to appreciate the area’s beauty.

Upon arriving at the Surian Kyoto Hotel, one will immediately sense the harmonious blend of historical significance and contemporary luxury. The Surian Kyoto Hotel features 39 guest rooms in traditional Japanese style, with 17 of these rooms boasting private onsen. Each room is designed to blend traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern comforts, providing a serene and luxurious retreat. The hotel’s design seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings, offering a peaceful and immersive experience that captures the essence of Kyoto’s historic charm.

Dining at the Surian Kyoto Hotel is a journey through Japanese culinary traditions. The hotel offers two dining options that highlight the regional flavors of Kyoto. The main restaurant, Kyo-Surian, originally a summerhouse of a baron in 1899, serves breakfast and dinner. The highlight of Kyo-Surian’s menu is a 13-course seasonal dinner that showcases the finest local ingredients and culinary craftsmanship. The Suiran, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Kyoto, offers a unique blend of traditional Japanese hospitality and modern luxury, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking an authentic and indulgent experience in one of Japan’s most historic cities.

Café Hassui, a waterside dining venue, offers a unique and charming experience. This 100-year-old building, once a retreat for 19th-century poets, now invites guests to enjoy desserts, foods, and drinks, including its own matcha brand served seasonally as kakigori (shaved ice). Guests staying at the hotel are treated to a special offer of complimentary champagne every evening at Café Hassui, adding an extra touch of luxury to their stay.

Guests can explore the nearby bamboo groves, enjoy a scenic boat ride on the Hozu River, or visit iconic landmarks like Tenryu-ji Temple and Togetsukyo Bridge. A hotel is more than just a room. I personally believe that a unique location makes a stay truly memorable. With its convenient position, surrounded by cultural and historic sites, Suiran ensures an unforgettable experience.

In addition to the bamboo groves, Tenryu-ji Temple, and Togetsukyo Bridge, guests can explore other significant sites in the Arashiyama area:

Okochi Sanso Villa: A beautiful villa and garden created by the famous Japanese actor Denjiro Okochi, offering stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere.

Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama: Located on Mt. Arashiyama, this park is home to a troop of Japanese macaque monkeys and provides panoramic views of Kyoto.

Sagano Scenic Railway: Also known as the "Romantic Train," this scenic railway offers a picturesque journey through the Hozu River Valley, especially beautiful during autumn.

Nonomiya Shrine: A small but historically significant Shinto shrine located within the bamboo grove, associated with the ancient Imperial family.

As mentioned, staying at the Suiran Hotel feels like a journey through time. Returning to the property seven years after my first trip to Japan was a unique experience. The hotel has significantly improved its services over the years, making my stay refreshing and new. The exceptional service and hospitality stand out in many ways. It's a priceless experience that transforms one's perception of Japan and visiting Kyoto.

During my several weeks in Kyoto, exploring various areas, I couldn't shake the same thought when I visited the Suiran Hotel, which first opened on March 23, 2015. While I have seen modern Kyoto, the Arashiyama area embodies the Japan I imagined before my first trip. It's a cultural and unique experience where traditions are upheld and palpable.
